ingredients and substitutions

Ingredients for the strawberry mango smoothie bowl on a white surface.
  • Frozen strawberries– You can use frozen whole strawberries or sliced. Sliced will work great if you don’t have a high-power blender. If you only have fresh fruit be sure to freeze it first. Strawberries are high in vitamin C and antioxidants.
  • Frozen mango chunks– Tasty mango isn’t always easy to get where I live so it’s great that this recipe uses frozen mango. Frozen mango will come in chunks or cubes. That beautiful orange color means these mango chunks are full of beta-carotene.
  • Coconut water– Coconut water will give this smoothie a touch of sweetness. You can also sub in your favorite juice, water, or milk.

variations

  • protein powder– I love this smoothie bowl with vanilla protein powder. You can see that ingredient pictured in this recipe, but it is an optional ingredient.

Other ideas for you to try are:

  • Collagen– is one of my favorite ways to add in protein without flavor.
  • Turmeric– is a major health boost, try just 1/2 teaspoon.
  • Coconut oil– boosts the fat to feel fuller longer and gives the smoothie a texture.
  • Honey– makes this extra sweet! I would start with 1 teaspoon.

Topping Ideas

Nuts: Almonds, walnuts, or coconut flakes for healthy fats.

Fresh Fruits: Sliced strawberries, mango chunks, or kiwi.

Seeds: Chia seeds, hemp hearts, or flaxseeds for added nutrients.

Granola: Adds a delightful crunch and fiber.

step by step instructions

Ingredients in the blender before blending.

Add– Place all of your ingredients for the smoothie into the blender. Cover and start to blend on low. If you are not using a high-power blender be sure to slice your banana first. You can do this when it is frozen with a sharp knife.

Tamper down- Use the tamper for your blender or if you don’t have one stop the blender and push the ingredients down towards the blade often. This is a very thick smoothie bowl. You will not be able to skip this step. You might be tempted to just add more liquids but hold out for that as a last resort. If you add liquid add it in small increments.

Blend until smooth and thick. So thick that you will need a spoon to scoop it out of the blender.

Tips for the Perfect Smoothie Bowl

  • Blend on low at first: Start low and slow when blending. If you try and go full blast with the blender, the blades will get stuck. Also, using a powerful blender will facilitate a smoother blending experience.
  • Minimal Liquid: Start with a small amount of coconut water; add more if necessary to achievethe desired thickness.
  • Use Frozen Fruits: Ensures a thick consistency without the need for ice.

Equipment

  • Blender

Ingredients

  • 1 cup frozen mango chunks
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • ¼ cup coconut water

Instructions

  • Add- In a high power blender add all ingredients as lited.
  • Blend- Blend all ingredients together. Start on low and use the tamper or stop the blendr and push the ingredients towards the blades as needed. See notes.
  • Serve- Serve right away by scooping into a bowl and topping with your favorite toppings. We love grain free granola, fresh fruit and hemp seeds for this bowl.

Notes

This recipe yields a very thick smoothie bowl. The key to a thick smoothie bowl is only using very little liquid. This means you will need to use the tamper to stop the blender a lot while blending. This will keep the blades moving in your blender.
If you need to add more liquid because the blender is not moving (or you are not using a high-power blender) add the liquid in increments of 1 tablespoon at a time.
