ingredients and substitutions

- Frozen strawberries– Frozen strawberries are awesome for smoothie bowls. Not only can you be sure to have flavorful strawberries any time of the year, but the frozen ones also help make this bowl super thick. We used frozen organic whole strawberries for this recipe. Here is how we love to freeze bananas for smoothies.
- Frozen banana– We love to prep our bananas ahead of time by slicing and freezing them. It makes things so easy for blending. But if you don’t have time for that you can peel a banana place it in a freezer-proof bag or container and freeze it. We like to break it up or slice it before adding it to the blender. 2 cups of sliced frozen banana is about the equivalent of 2 med/large bananas. You MUST use frozen ripe bananas for optimal flavor and creaminess.
- Coconut Cream– For this recipe, you will shake your coconut cream can or blend it after opening it. You will have a pourable coconut cream when you do this versus scooping the separate coconut cream from the liquid in the can. If you don’t have coconut cream you can substitute full-fat coconut milk in a can or yogurt.
- Honey– The touch of honey adds just the right amount of sweetness to this bowl. You can substitute it with pure maple syrup for a vegan option or even date syrup. You can also leave it out and the bowl will still be delicious.
- Vanilla– Pure vanilla extract gives this smoothie recipe all the ice cream vibes. A touch of warmth and an amazing smell for a boost of flavor.

how to make a strawberry banana smoothie bowl

- Add: In your blender or food processor add all of the ingredients in the order listed in the recipe card. This is important for optimal blending.

2. Start low: Turn your blender on low, and quickly boost the speed to medium-high. Use your tamper the entire time. If your blender doesn’t have a tamper stop the blender, and push the ingredients down towards the blades with a rubber spatula often.

3. Blend: Blend until smooth and evenly combined.

4. Serve: Serve immediately or save for later by freezing. Top with your favorite toppings!
tips for making this strawberry banana bowl

- Stick with frozen fruit– This is not a recipe where subbing in fresh fruit will work.
- Patience and the tamper are your best friend– An amazing smoothie bowl takes a few minutes to make. Don’t expect to hit blend and it not take work. You will need to use the tamper or stop the blender. We find that even with the tamper to get that final beautiful Vitamix swirl you need to stop, open the lid, give it a stir, and then do one final blend.
- Add more liquid slowly- While we don’t recommend adding more liquid if you need to, add it 1 tablespoon at a time. If you add too much, you will not have the thick smoothie bowl pictured.
