I love this drink. It’s sweet, frothy and honestly feels super decadent to drink. Not like a drink that has serious health benefits.

It’s like having a Starbucks drink that helps you drift off into a peaceful slumber.

One of my favorite ways to get the best night of sleep is to drink this about 30-60 minutes before bedtime. Then do a sleep meditation when I lay down in bed. It is a guaranteed night of dreams and deep sleep.

Benefits of drinking this recipe

Moon milk contains several powerful ingredients that help decrease anxiety, combat stress in the body and promote relaxation.

Full of antioxidants and easy to make adaptable for a non dairy diet, this recipe has tons of benefits. Read below to find out more of the benefits of each ingredient.

Lavender for sleep

Lavender helps with sleep for a few reasons.

Studies show that it can promote relaxation and decrease anxiety. One of the ways it helps decrease those bad feelings is through the scent of it. So take the time to take a few deep breaths in of your warm drink, smelling the aroma.

This does more than just smell good. Studies on lavender and the nervous system now show it actually sends signals to the brain through the nerves in the nose that stimulate relaxation.

Health benefits of cardamom

Cardamom is a spice that originates from India and has a slightly sweet flavor profile and a bright spicy smell. It reminds me of how nutmeg tastes and smells. It has many uses including culinary and medicinal.

The taste is probably the most familiar to you if you drink chai tea.

It is known for containing compounds that fight inflammation. So there is a possibility it can help prevent conditions that affect the inflammation in the body.

Studies have shown that it has a diuretic effect that can help lower blood pressure. This works by removing excess fluid with urination reducing the overall amount of fluid the heart needs to push around.

Due to the antioxidant profile of cardamom, it may fight cancer by removing free radicals in the body.

Antioxidants essentially act like magnets to free radicals, binding to them and then removing them from the body.

Adaptogenic effects from turmeric

Adaptogens help us cope with stress better. They help us increase our resistance to stress which, easily put, decreases our total cortisol levels.

Turmeric has a ton of health benefits and I go into detail in my post for Pineapple Apple Cider Vinegar Morning Shots with turmeric if you want to read more there.

Ingredients and substitutions

To make this drink you will need:

  • milk (regular or non dairy)
  • honey
  • culinary safe dried lavender
  • vanilla
  • turmeric
  • cardamom

Substitutions

As mentioned you can sub in milk you prefer. I used coconut milk. But if you drink dairy, warm dairy milk does help with promoting sleep.

Expert Tips

I personally don’t recommend topping your drink with lavender buds as the pictures show. I don’t think that will bring a very pleasant drinking experience but to each their own.

I don’t have ashwaganda in this recipe. Although it is a very common ingredient found in moon milk it’s not something we have around the house. If you do, feel free to add ¼ of a teaspoon to the recipe as well.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups milk (dairy or unsweetened non-dairy)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 teaspoons dried lavender

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a small sauce pan and whisk to combine. Heat the moon milk over low/medium heat to bring to a very gentle simmer. Simmer for 5-7 minutes being sure to stir frequently so the milk does not scorch to the bottom of the pan.
  • Strain thru a fine mesh sieve to remove the lavender and then place the heated moon milk in a blender on high for a few seconds to make frothy. If you have a frother you could also use that.

Notes

  • If you happen to have ashwagandha, you could add ¼ teaspoon to this to increase the adaptogenic effect.
