Health Benefits of Blackberry Strawberry Banana Smoothies

  • They’re high in fiber. Sadly, most Americans are not getting nearly enough fiber into their daily diets. By starting your day with this plant-based smoothie, you can start the day with more than 12 grams of fiber. Try our other 11 High-Fiber Smoothies too!
  • Rich in vitamins and minerals. I think it goes without saying that enjoying a daily fruit smoothie will naturally increase your vitamin intake. But blackberries in particular are extra rich in potassium and vitamin C.
  • High in antioxidants. Antioxidants are helpful in a number of ways, even attributed to better heart health, lower risk of cancer, and more.
  • Helps digestion. By increasing your fiber intake, you’ll naturally find your digestion improves over time, too!

The Base Recipe Ingredients You’ll Need

  • blackberries – Frozen blackberries are best for the perfect cold, creamy smoothie. If you only have fresh berries, freeze them first for a couple of hours.
  • banana – Again, frozen banana is essential to achieving a thick and creamy smoothie. If you are new to making smoothies at home, check out our super helpful guide on How to Freeze Bananas for Smoothies.
  • strawberries – We use whole, frozen bananas. If you do not have a high-speed blender, it would be better to freeze the strawberries in quarters. This will allow them to blend easier without burning out your blender’s blade.
  • milk – We prefer unsweetened almond milk, but any milk will work. Note that if you use a flavored or sweetened non dairy milk like vanilla oat milk, it will adjust the flavor of the smoothie and you may not need the additional date syrup.
  • date syrup – If you’ve made our Paleo Blender Hot Chocolate, you’ll know we love using dates as a natural, fruit sweetener. It contains all of the fiber and nutrition from the whole fruit and is one of the healthiest sweeteners you can use.
  • almond butter – Adds nuttiness, protein, healthy fats, and helps keep you full longer.

Add-ins and Nutritional Variations

  • Add 1-2 scoops of collagen. Collagen can help improve your skin and relieve joint pain, among other things. Many versions are unflavored making them easy to add to your mixed berry smoothie without effecting the flavor.
  • Add greens. Greens will turn your reddish, purple smoothie brown, but adding a serving of leafy greens, especially spinach to your smoothie almost never changes the flavor. This is a perfect way to get more vegetables and nutrition into both your and your kids diet. Greens powders like barley grass juice powder or spirulina are much stronger in flavor, but still a great addition to a daily smoothie.
  • Nut butter variations. We typically prefer more neutral tasting nut butters, like almond butter in our smoothies, but that’s not to say you can’t use another. Try peanut butter, cashew butter, macadamia nut butter, or nut blends like Nuttzo. Sun butter or tahini would also work as a nut-free option.
  • Add omegas. Blending 1-2 tablespoons of chia seeds, hemp seeds, or flaxseed into your smoothie is an easy way to instantly boost your healthy fats, protein, and omega3s.
  • Use a berry blend. Substitute the frozen blackberries and frozen blackberries with 1 cup of a frozen berry blend.

How to Make a Blackberry Strawberry Banana Smoothie

  1. Add ingredients to the blender. In order for the blender to blend quickly and easily, it is important to add the ingredients in as follows: almond milk, date syrup, almond butter, frozen fruit.
  1. Blend until smooth. If needed, use the tamper to push the ingredients to the blade and scrape down the sides of the blender canister as needed.
  2. Serve. Pour your smoothie into your desired smoothie glass and enjoy immediately while cold!

Tips and Tricks

  • Use frozen fruit – Fresh fruit is going to make a thin, less creamy smoothie.
  • Sweeten to taste – If your fruit is extra ripe or if you are a person that enjoys earthy, veggie-rich smoothies, wait to blend the date syrup in until the end as needed. It’s easier to sweeten a smoothie than make it less sweet.
  • Start the blender on low, then quickly increase – High-speed blenders are meant to be used at higher settings, so don’t be afraid to quickly increase the speed. Leaving the blender at too low of a speed for too long can actually do more damage to the motor.
  • Avoid adding ice cubes. It may be tempting to add ice to the smoothie to compensate for fresh fruit or make it colder, but all this will do is water down the flavor of your smoothie.

How to Store a Leftover Smoothie

If you’ve made more smoothie than you can drink, good news! It can be saved for later.

  • How to refrigerate a smoothie: This is a good option if you plan on drinking the smoothie later in the day and don’t mind the smoothie getting a bit thinner. To store, place the leftover berry banana smoothie in a glass jar with an airtight lid and store for up to 24 hours.
  • How to freeze a smoothie: Smoothies can be frozen whole in jars, but keep in mind you will have to let it defrost and it won’t be thick and creamy by the time you can drink it.
If you want to blend your smoothie into the same texture it was to start, freeze the smoothie in an ice cube tray or similar silicone tray. Then when ready to drink again, transfer the ice cubes to the blender and allow them to thaw for 15 to 20 minutes, or until softened enough to blend.
