Whether you practice on your own or are a yoga instructor planning classes you might find a time when you want to change up savasana. Adding an inspirational quote at the beginning or end of savasana is a really great way to give your mind something to anchor to drift into relaxation or head out into the real world.

The power of savasana

While this pose may seem like the final resting pose of your practice, its actually what you have been working towards during your asana practice.

Savasana (pronounced shuh-VAH-suh-nuh), also known as corpse pose, is a supine position. Traditionally you are laying flat with the legs spread hips distance apart, and the hands are down by the hips, palms facing upwards. However, modifications can be made to make this position more comfortable, like using bolsters and blankets.

The ultimate goal in this position is to find deep relaxation and comfort so that you can let go, and just be. We don’t want to clutter the mind with a lot of words or quotes, but instead, offer our mind and body a chance to recalibrate. So be careful when planning what quotes to add to your practice.

As a yoga nidra instructor, I am passionate about the power of savasana and the deep healing meditative states you can reach in this posture. If you rest deep enough, as you do in the practice of yoga nidra, you are speaking to the subconscious mind. This means we should be very careful with the words spoken in this deep state.

I loved this explanation by Isabelle Pikoren, “Savasana marks the death of who we were when we first walked into our yoga class. In the space of this pose, we have the opportunity to transform. What we’re re-born into before we awaken and head back out into the world, is entirely up to us.

The time spent in this posture allows us to rest and become one with who we are. To become a witness to our experience and learn that we are separate from what we perceive and what happens in our mind. Our Highest Self is accessed and connection to spirit happens when we let go and watch with curiosity and mindfulness.

4. “The Magic Formula: Deliberately think and say the magic words, thank you. The more you deliberately think and say the magic words, thank you, the more gratitude you feel. The more gratitude you deliberately think and feel, the more abundance you receive. Gratitude is a feeling. So the ultimate aim in practicing gratitude is to deliberately feel it as much as you can because it’s the force of your feeling that accelerates the magic in your life. Newton’s law is one for one – what you give you receive, equally. That means that if you increase your feeling of gratitude, the results in your life will expand to be equal to your feeling! The truer the feeling, the more sincerely grateful you are, the faster your life will change.”

Tips for using quotes in savasana

  • Leave room for silence- Say your quote and then leave room for silence. Savasana is a time for the practitioner to connect with their True Self. Allow their inner teacher to do the work after your brief guidance.
  • Use the quote at the end of savasana as a time to reflect after the mind has settled and opened up from resting in silence.
